With a history that dates back all the way to the ill-fated Nokia N-Gage, Gameloft’s highly successful mobile racing series Asphalt is the latest game to get the esports treatment. Gameloft has announced the it will kick off the first round of its forthcoming Asphalt esports series this summer, set to conclude at Germany’s Gamescom in August.
From a monetization perspective, it makes sense for Asphalt to enter the arena in an effort to claim a slice of the $1.65 billion esports pie. Partnering with ESL to organize the tournament, and Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi as its official gaming device, Gameloft hopes to make Asphalt the center of the competitive esports gaming discussion this year.
Qualification rounds begin on May 20th, with top ranking players from all around the world competing for a change to head to Gamescom for the finale. The prize? About $22,350.
