Now that 2019 is half over, facts and figures start coming in for analysis and predictions for the upcoming year. For the first time since 2015, the United States is the top gaming market in the world according to market research firm Newzoo in its 2019 Global Games report, published today. 2019 will be the first time in 4 years that the U.S. has taken the top spot. This forecast isn’t just because of the freeze on gaming licenses in China but also because of home consoles like PlayStation and Xbox.
“It’s a combination of both: new console users and, in general, massive growth in console spending boosting the U.S. market. About 50% of the U.S.’s games revenues come from console,” senior market analyst Tom Wijman said “Additionally, the Chinese licensing freeze impacting the domestic market, indeed.”
Highlights from the report include:
- 2019 will see the global game market hit revenues of $152.1 billion, which is an uptick of 9.6% from 2018. 45% of this will come from mobile, which is the largest segment in the gaming market.
- U.S. will be the No. 1 gaming market at $36.9 billion in 2019. This will be the first time that China hasn’t been the top market since 2015.
- Asia-Pacific will remain the top market at $72.2 billion, and this is up 7.6% from 2018. It’s 47% of global revenue.
- The game market is healthy, showing growth in every segment.
