Whether it’s due to E3 anticipation, Summer right around the corner, new consoles on the horizon, or just a dearth of quality new games, May 2019 will go down in history as the worst May for video game sales in 6 years.
According to NPD, tracked game revenue fell some 11% from the same time last year, due to declining hardware and software sales to consumers.
If you count only sales of new software – titles released within the month – the picture gets even more bleak; May 2019 is the worst May for new game sales on record since 1998.
The top 10 games during the month of May 2019:
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Days Gone
- Total War: Three Kingdoms
- Rage 2
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- MLB 19: The Show
- NBA 2K19
Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware of the month; coincidentally, Nintendo was the only major console manufacturer not to announce new hardware during or around E3.
